Did you tried to use FTP to upload files into the HDD ? Try it, also try to copy files from HDD to HDD and from the Flash/Image into the HDD. As it seems that you could have Samba rights problems, check with the "client" you use to copy files inside the HDD... so try various other tools like FTP, cp, etc.
