Sony and TCL have signed an agreement granting TCL a majority stake in Sony's TV and home entertainment business, pending final approval.
In a joint announcement, the companies stated that the spin-off will take the form of a joint venture, with TCL holding 51% and Sony 49% of the shares.
This new joint venture, in which TCL assumes majority control, will operate globally and manage everything from product development and design to manufacturing and sales.
TCL CSOT already supplies LCD panels for Sony TVs, including the Bravia 9.
Sony confirmed that the spin-off covers both Bravia TVs and home audio equipment, such as soundbars.
The new company will continue to market TVs under the Sony and Bravia brands, even while utilizing TCL's display technology.
So far, only a memorandum of understanding has been signed. A binding agreement is expected by the end of March 2026, according to Sony Japan. The new company is expected to begin operations in April 2027.
- Sony to spin off TV and home audio division to TCL
In a surprising turn of events, Sony and TCL have signed an agreement granting TCL majority ownership of Sony's TV and home entertainment business, pending final approval.

So far, only a memorandum of understanding has been signed. A binding agreement is expected by the end of March 2026, according to Sony Japan. The new company is expected to begin operations in April 2027.
What happens now? The announcement is surprising, but Sony has long struggled to compete in the TV market against leaner South Korean and Chinese makers such as LG, Samsung, Hisense and TCL, which is rapidly becoming a juggernaut.
It naturally raises all kinds of questions: Will Sony continue to sell OLED TVs? Will the Sony TV brand expand down-market? How will warranties and support be affected? What was the final straw for Sony? FlatpanelsHD does not yet have answers, but we are actively seeking information.
- "We are pleased to have reached this agreement with TCL for a strategic partnership. By combining both companies' expertise, we aim to create new customer value in the home entertainment field, delivering even more captivating audio and visual experiences to customers worldwide," said Kimio Maki, Representative Director, President and CEO, Sony Corp.
- "We believe that this strategic partnership with Sony represents a unique opportunity to combine the strengths of Sony and TCL, creating a powerful platform for sustainable growth. Through strategic business complementarity, technology and know-how sharing, and operational integration, we expect to elevate our brand value, achieve greater scale, and optimize the supply chain in order to deliver superior products and services to our customers," said DU Juan, Chairperson, TCL Electronics Holdings Limited.
