Altice Portugal strikes deal with Netflix

Altice Portugal/Meo has added Netflix to its TV offering via the MEObox. The global subscription video-on-demand leader will appear in the MEObox user grid on channel 88.

Meo said it would also soon make 1,200 hours of Netflix 4K content available via the MEObox 4K, its new 4K UHD TV set-top.

The agreement will bring content including Stranger Things, Narcos and 13 Reasons Why to Meo customers.

The agreement is the latest in a series of partnership deals struck by the OTT TV provider in Europe, and follows hard on its deal with cable operator Euskaltel in neighbouring Spain. Both Meo and Euskaltel rated highly in Netflix’s regular ‘speed index’ of operators that provide the best experience of the SVOD service on their broadband platforms.

Altice, which saw its share-price nosedive after posting poor Q3 results last week, is a major investor in premium content in its own right. The group recently committed to establish an international content production hub in Portugal to feed its international properties.

Altice is currently in the process of trying to secure regulatory approval for its planned acquisition of the country’s major commercial broadcaster, Media Capital.
