Broadcom BCM7424 VU+ Duo² white LED - 10/17/19 09:28 PM

Hello I'm a beginner but have read a lot about it,

My VU+ DUO2 only shows a white LED, so I want to flash the bootloader again. But for my chip k9k8go8uod I Need a BCM7424 but I can't find anywhere. I would also like to know which Jtag port I can use, the P703, P401 or P301? I bought the Cypress CY7C68013A EZ-USB FX2LP on eBay and it should arrive in a few days.

Can anyone help me? I'm grateful for any advice.

Re: Broadcom BCM7424 VU+ Duo² white LED - 10/18/19 12:00 AM

As far as I known is there no bbs software for these BCM7424 cpu, as also no nand flash script.
Jtag pins question, I think, the four pins P301

Issue, white LED
Be sure that it failed to read from the usb ports, use a usb stick with an activity led, or monitor it with the rs232 terminal programs as putty to see if it"s doing an attempt to read from a usb stick.
You could also try to add the force.update to the usb files.

Re: Broadcom BCM7424 VU+ Duo² white LED - 10/18/19 11:18 PM

Thank you for the quick reply.

The receiver is dead. Nothing is shown on the display, except for the white LED.
The USB stick is also not getting read at the USB port.
With Putty no movement is indicated at the rs232 port.
I found a k9k8go8uod.xml file for the Vu+ Ultimo and inserted it into the BCM7413 software.
I am just waiting for my hardware CY7C68013A from China to arrive, then I'll start some tries.

I'm grateful for any help.

Re: Broadcom BCM7424 VU+ Duo² white LED - 10/19/19 01:18 AM

Yeah well I have so my doubts if this BCM7413 will connect to the BCM7424, but it's worth to try.
Or maybe the BCM7429 will make a connection.

But did you also have tried to hold the front push button, and switching the box on.
It must be fully turned off, and at least for a few minutes before you can try it.

Re: Broadcom BCM7424 VU+ Duo² white LED - 10/19/19 02:59 PM

I can only try this when I have the Cypress CY7C68013A EZ-USB FX2LP.

Where can I get the BCM7429?

I have already tried pressing the front button whilst turning the device on.

Re: Broadcom BCM7424 VU+ Duo² white LED - 10/28/19 07:50 PM

I re-installed the software BBS 3. It is running now. The delivery from China doesn't seem to be coming yet.
Now I also ordered the TL866 Plus Programmer, unfortunately I will have to wait for a few more weeks.
In the meantime I measured the voltage on the P301 port, from left to right 3.3V, 3.3V, 3.3V and GND would this port be suitable for Jtag?
Posted by: Johnny_B

Re: Broadcom BCM7424 VU+ Duo² white LED - 10/29/19 09:33 PM

Actually, when you measure it precisely then it should be 3.3v, 3.2v, 3.2v, Gnd.
Thus, Vcc, Scl, Sda, Gnd
However since the cypress board already has his power from the usb, you only need to connect the Sda, Scl, Gnd, and yes it's based on the amount of pins, and measurements suitable for jtag.

TL866 Plus Programmer, good choice due the clone option and also one of my favorites.

Re: Broadcom BCM7424 VU+ Duo² white LED - 11/07/19 10:59 PM

Today I recieved the TL866II Plus Programmer, could you help me with the pin assignment? :

TL866II Plus----------------VU+ Duo2 Board P301

1. VPP- MCLR
2. VCC +5V
3. GND------------------------------ 4. GND
4. PGD - ICSPDAT ----------------- 3. SDA
5. PGC - ICSPCLK ----------------- 2. SCL
6. NC.

Is that right?

Re: Broadcom BCM7424 VU+ Duo² white LED - 11/07/19 11:20 PM

As far as I know, you have it now about the P703 which is a 6 pins ICPS connector and I have no information about that.

As for the TL866II Plus, this has a ICPS port but you need to take a look to the pinout of it.
In any case, the duo seems to have also a another port, the P401
which is a jtag connector but also by this, you need to check at least the vcc and ground pins before you do an attempt to connect it because the connections are often not basic.
But it has as far as I know, there is no use to do that.

The one I gave was the P301 four pins I2C (Jtag) connector.
This is placed between the U807/U804 and can be used with the Cypress board to do an attempt to fix the boot loader of the box.

Re: Broadcom BCM7424 VU+ Duo² white LED - 11/08/19 06:48 PM

The schema I have given above are the connections from the TL866II Plus ICSP to the port P301. Would that be possible?

Re: Broadcom BCM7424 VU+ Duo² white LED - 11/09/19 10:40 PM

I have connected the P301 to the ICSP port, but if I enter the IC "Samsung chip K9K8G08U0D" in the software I can not select an ICSP port. What other setting options do I have?

Re: Broadcom BCM7424 VU+ Duo² white LED - 11/10/19 07:00 PM

The ICPS post of the programmer is not usable for an I2C port.
This programmer port is only usable for ICPS connections and to create a connection, the programmer must have the correct part in the list to work with it.
And I have no idea what can be accessed with the duo2 and the ICPS port, but I think it's used for accessing the cpu, or debugging from it, in any case (I think) not to access the Nand flash chip.

In any case, as far as I known, you can not use this programmer to access the nand flash chip by this method.
You should remove the nand flash chip, and place it directly into the programmer to get access to it.

For the I2C port, you need a I2C programmer, as for example the Cypress board.
This board you can use with the bbs software, and when you have the correct bbs xml script to access the nand chip you should be able to access the nand flash chip.
With the bbs software, you should be able to upload the boot loader (if you have it for the duo2) to bring the box into the state as that you be able to upload an image file on the regulair way, by the usb.

If/When you can get a bbs connection, and if/when you are be able to get contact to the nand flash chip, but you get an error.
Then there may some tricks you could try to complete it.
When that not helps, then you could consider to remove the nand flash chip, and to try to fix it with the programmer, or even to program the nand flash chip with a backup from another duo2 box.

Re: Broadcom BCM7424 VU+ Duo² white LED - 11/11/19 09:19 PM

Yes you are right, I will order the Cypress board again because I did not receive the first order. Would the Cypress board with 2 jumpers work as well?

Re: Broadcom BCM7424 VU+ Duo² white LED - 11/14/19 12:54 AM

The two jumper version should be working fine as you can see here connected with a vu+ solo2.

Re: Broadcom BCM7424 VU+ Duo² white LED - 12/01/19 06:45 PM

Hello,
I got my Cypress board and set up the driver, then connected to the port P301 but the board is not connected, it only indicates "disconnect".
I assume that no connection can be made. Will probably desolder the flash and have to install a new one.

Re: Broadcom BCM7424 VU+ Duo² white LED - 12/01/19 09:32 PM

Yeah you need the bbs software for this BCM7424 cpu to make a I2C (Jtag) connection with the cypress board, and that, I do not have.

As for the nand flash chip replacements,
You must program the new nand flash chip before placing it on the board, otherwise it still not works because you can not flash the empty chip by the usb.
For this, you must at least have the correct Cfe file on the chip programmed to bring the usb port flash method back to life.

Thus, you must have a working copy (binaries file) from a working duo2 box and programming it to the new nand flash chip before you place it on the board.

I could help you on a bin file, made from an original duo2 box, which you can use with your nand flash programmer, if you have the socket tsop48 for it.
You need this socket to place the nand flash chip onto your programmer.

Re: Broadcom BCM7424 VU+ Duo² white LED - 12/02/19 09:18 PM

Yes it would be great if I could get the bin file. I ordered the Tsop48 Nand adapter 3 weeks ago and I am still waiting for it to arrive.
Is only the binary file, or even the CFE file supposed to be on the Nand flash?
Posted by: Admin

Re: Broadcom BCM7424 VU+ Duo² white LED - 12/02/19 09:41 PM

CFE is naturally loaded into the Flash Chip, so I bet it is included (and generally it's on the first Kb as it's the bootloader).

Re: Broadcom BCM7424 VU+ Duo² white LED - 12/03/19 12:07 AM

An copy op the Duo2 nand chip and some info about this can be download here from my website,

And no, I can only give a full copy (clone) file of my nand flash chip because it is not possible to only flash the nand chip with a cfe file when there is no I2c/Jtag software for this box.
Nevertheless, after successful programming a nand flash chip with these file(s) you should be able to flash the box on the regular way.

Re: Broadcom BCM7424 VU+ Duo² white LED - 12/07/19 08:00 PM

I have tried to flash the Nand chip all night but it fails in the verification. I have also tried different settings but I always get the same result. Stop during verification.
What could be the reason?

Stop during verification

Re: Broadcom BCM7424 VU+ Duo² white LED - 12/07/19 08:13 PM

Im not sure what you mean, but if it't the verify part error after that it has compleet the writing to the chip, just as one of my pictures shows, this one,, then it's still usable to place it back to see if it's works, or at least had helped to flashing the box by the usb.

If it failed due more than ten bad blocks, then it's wiser to use a new chip.
Nevertheless, this all is also posted in my topic/forum about this.

Unfortunately, I had no luck, the VU + Duo2 does not boot, but I will still try more.

Re: Broadcom BCM7424 VU+ Duo² white LED - 12/17/19 12:00 AM

Sorry to hear but as I say earlier, it only helps if it's not a hardware issue.

Maybe it's still not working because one, or more nand flash chip pins does not soldered well, the ones which are used, or maybe it's because you have used your old nand flash chip.
However, when the programming went well, then there should be no reason to think that it's caused due this.

Re: Broadcom BCM7424 VU+ Duo² white LED - 12/17/19 11:04 PM

Hello, it seems to be a hardware problem. I programmed a new Samsung chip as well as the old one and thanks to my trinocular stereomicroscope I soldered it clean but so far without success.
I have found that (the RT9018B Voltage Regulator) shows U807 on the capacitor C837 times 2.5V or 0.38V. The voltage regulator could be the problem. Could the Broadcom CPU be broken? I ordered the RT90188 Voltage Regulator but it will take a while, until it arrives.

Re: Broadcom BCM7424 VU+ Duo² white LED - 12/18/19 01:59 AM

Yeah, hard to say if it's due the dc to dc regulator, or caused due a to heavy load onto the Vout pin which is as far as I know used for the Cpu and the Network.

But I have here a Ohms overview, the VIN must be loading up to around the 1865ohms, and the VOUT 1215ohms.
Measured between a ground spot and the measurements spot.

But still, indeed it could be a defective Dc to Dc ic what is more common.
Posted by: Giovanni001

Re: Broadcom BCM7424 VU+ Duo² white LED - 12/19/19 12:01 PM

My measurements on the U807:
Gnd---Gnd------800 ohm-------x--------VOUT = 0.38V
--x---60.00K----0.65k-------1.771M------ VIN = 3.34V
Posted by: Johnny_B

Re: Broadcom BCM7424 VU+ Duo² white LED - 12/20/19 12:36 AM

The Vin voltage are fine, the Vout not, but that you already noticed.
As for the Vout ohm value, is indeed incorrect and could indeed be the U807 because it normally should deliver this voltage output when the circuit is 800ohms, but actually, you only know it for sure when you remove the U807 and to check if the ohm value goes up from the Vout, or just wait when you have the new one and see if it's helps.

I installed the RT90188 Voltage Regulator, 2.5v voltage is there on C837, but the receiver still doesn't work. But I will keep trying.

@Toysoft
we know this link. I have been at the stage of replacing capacitors for a month now, but I do not recommend doing it because it is very compiled and very difficult. I had to buy a lot of new tools for this repair. This is not a hobbyist job!
