I have a DM800HD which boots up fine works for a bit then signal disappears have tried different tuners that are ok in other box's! I'm thinking a overheating problem would you agree or is there something else I can try?

Looking on top of cpu the cooling plate us hollowed out and on wonky I was thinking of removing and fitting a better one do you think this may help?

Keep the cpu cooling on the chip, don't remove it. The fan on top of it really doesn't do a difference.

Check with Johnny, he will for sure tell you,

Just, as a test cool the cpu with a external fan.
If that works, build one in it.

However when you build a fan into a dm800hd, do not use the fan connector because it ballast the voltage circuit.
Better is to connect a 12v fan to the 12v input connector and to reduce the speed use a dc to dc converter or build a fan controller by yourself.
See google with searching to fan controller schematic.
